I am a licensed psychologist with over fifteen years of experience providing therapy in both Spanish and English. I earned my master’s degree in counseling psychology from Indiana University and my doctorate in counseling psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. My doctoral program emphasized multicultural competence and using research to inform practice. Therefore, I use an evidence-based, cultural and trauma-informed approach in therapy. I have worked with Veterans, women and men diagnosed with HIV/AIDS, women diagnosed with breast cancer, and individuals experiencing substance abuse, depression, anxiety, and relationship difficulties. I am licensed in the states of Texas and Iowa.
My focus areas include addressing problems with depression, relationship conflicts, grief, loss, experiences of trauma and abuse, discrimination, acculturation, separation difficulties, stress management, and various other life problems. My goal is to help individuals improve the quality of their lives by helping them find personal meaning, balance, and clarity. To achieve this goal, I provide active support, evidence-based treatments, guidance, and a safe and positive space to grow.
It is common for people to feel intimidated or nervous about coming to therapy and talking to a stranger. However, deciding to come to therapy, in my opinion, is a sign of strength and courage. It demonstrates a willingness to grow and accept help. Therefore, do not hesitate to invest in yourself. You will have the opportunity to guide the course of your treatment, and I will help you reach your goals.
I offer a positive, safe, and inclusive space for clients to discover personal meaning, develop new skills, and improve their wellbeing. I will focus on their strengths and will use the treatment tools that best fit their needs. Clients will have the opportunity to reshape negative emotional experiences and find alternative and more effective ways of thinking. They can expect me to be honest, genuine, and transparent.
I believe clients are the experts of their lives and I respect their unique perspectives and journeys. Therefore, the ideal clients are those individuals who wish to make positive changes in their lives but who may need help figuring out the steps needed to improve their conditions. These clients may be struggling with histories of trauma, relationship conflicts, self-doubt, depression, adjustment difficulties, or other situations that affect their wellbeing and interpersonal relationships. Their overall goals are to leave behind feelings of guilt and shame and to feel confident and empowered.
I will use cognitive behavioral therapy and other evidence-based treatments depending on your needs. In the first sessions, I will ask you to tell me about yourself and the reasons why you believe you are having problems. We will focus on exploring your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. You will have an opportunity to learn new coping skills and find alternative and healthier ways of thinking. The goal is to help you feel more balanced and improve your wellbeing.
